Prison Resources Foundation FAQ

Q: What kinds of books do you accept?

A: We accept donations of all kinds of books, provided that they are not worn to the point of being unusable. Different correctional institutions have different needs, and having a diverse collection of books and media helps us meet those needs as they arise. However, there are some kinds of books that are particularly in demand in correctional libraries. For specifics, see our Literacy Initiative page.

Q: Why give books to prisoners when there are so many other needy people?

A: It is precisely because of the stigma that goes with being incarcerated that we think prisoners need our help the most. We consider the tremendous rate of incarceration in contemporary United States to be troubling. And, as book lovers, we are concerned about the lack of access to books that many incarcerated persons experience. That is why it is our goal to increase access to books and to the transformative power of reading for inmates across the nation.

Q: Are you a sectarian group?

A: The Foundation does not have a religious agenda. But we are not averse to providing prisons with religious materials if such materials are in demand, nor are we averse to working in concert with religious groups who conduct positive prison ministries.

Q: How can I donate books to the Foundation?

A: We periodically hold book drives and other events at which guests can make money donations or donate books. If you are moving or have some other reason why you need to get rid of some books immediately, contact us. We will be happy to arrange a time when you can drop your books off with us.

The Foundation seeks donations of all kinds of books that are in good condition. But there are some kinds of books that are especially in demand among inmates. Among these are:

  • Contemporary fiction
  • Genre fiction, such as westerns, romance novels and thrillers
  • Poetry
  • Popular psychology and self-help
  • Job search and career advice
  • Health and nutrition
  • Religion, especially Islam
  • Books about crime, gangs and prison life
  • Dictionaries, thesauruses and atlases

Q: What is the best way for me to donate books if I don’t live near Chicago?

A: You can simply ship the books to the address below. The United States Postal Service offers a “Media Mail” rate, which is a very inexpensive way to ship books. If you have questions email us at the address below.
